This is what you will do first thing in the day when you wake up. It’s the perfect time to focus on yourself before life gets in the way and it’s the perfect way to ensure your day gets off to the right start. So, what does the ideal morning routine look like? Here are some ideas to start you off…

Exercise

Working out first thing in the morning will help to get the blood circulating and will release hormones that wakes you up. If you train before breakfast, you’ll burn more calories by training in a ‘fasted state’.

Meditation

Another thing you’ll find that many very successful people do is to start their day with meditation. Meditation is a fantastic tool for combating stress and helping yourself to cope better with the challenges that life faces you with. What’s more, is that meditation can help to boost your concentration and create more grey matter to improve your reasoning skills and working memory!

Gratitude

Gratitude exercises are very valuable for being happier and more effective. The problem is that many driven people forget to stop and take stock of what they’ve already accomplished or how good their lives are already. Instead, they only ever think about the things they have yet to accomplish and what they want next.

Spend five minutes in the morning then and write down three things that you are thankful for. These can be big things or small things. But simply by focussing on them, you will feel more content and happier and your work will be more fruitful.

To-Do List

Starting the day with a to-do list is an excellent way to enhance your productivity. It’s also a very good way to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the volume of things you need to do. Make a list of all the things that you absolutely must prioritize and then the things you’ll do if you can. Split your day into segments and then just work through each job one at a time!

What inspires you? Pain can be good because it forces some people to make a change. Debts may lead someone into stepping outside the box and starting their own business. Being humiliated gives us the ‘push’ to speak up and fight for ourselves to save our face from the next embarrassments. It may be a bitter experience, a friend’s tragic story, a great movie, or an inspiring book that will help us get up and get just the right amount of motivation we need in order to improve ourselves.

With the countless negativity the world brings about, how can you stay on track? Try on the tips, we call the ABCs of life!

Action. Take action. Avoid Negative people at all cost. They only find happiness in bringing you down. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Believe in your self, and in what you can do. Sometimes its hard to believe in yourself after you failed so many times but being a woman you will always find a way to make it work

Consider things on every angle and aspect. Motivation comes from determination. To be able to understand life, you should feel the sun from both sides.

Don’t give in and don’t give up. Thomas Edison failed once, twice, more than thrice before he came up with his invention and perfected the incandescent light bulb. Make motivation as your steering wheel.

Learn to love your self. Sometimes its easier said than done especially when you have kids, work and a whole lot of activities for the day but it is important to set aside some time for yourself. You are not being selfish, you deserve it!!! It makes a big difference especially when you are already burn out, it give you a new perspective on your day to day life

Make things happen. Motivation is when your dreams are put into work clothes.

Never lie, cheat or steal. Always play a fair game.

Open your eyes. People should learn the horse attitude and horse sense. They see things in 2 ways – how they want things to be, and how they should be.

Practice makes perfect. Practice is about motivation. It lets us learn repertoire and ways on how can we recover from our mistakes.

Quitters never win. And winners never quit. So, choose your fate – are you going to be a quitter? Or a winner?

Ready yourself. Motivation is also about preparation. We must hear the little voice within us telling us to get started before others will get on their feet and try to push us around. Remember, it wasn’t raining when Noah build the ark.

Stop procrastinating!

Take control of your life. Discipline or self control jives synonymously with motivation. Both are key factors in self-improvement.

Understand others. If you know very well how to talk, you should also learn how to listen. Yearn to understand first, and to be understood the second.

Visualize it. Motivation without vision is like a boat on a dry land.

Want it more than anything. Dreaming means believing. And to believe is something that is rooted out from the roots of motivation and self-improvement.

X Factor is what will make you different from the others. When you are motivated, you tend to put on “extras” on your life like extra time for family, extra help at work, extra care for friends, and so on.

You are unique. No one in this world looks, acts, or talks like you. Value your life and existence, because you’re just going to spend it once.

So here we are again – shorter days, wind and rain galore, long evenings wrapped in a blanket. I absolutely LOVE fall, it’s my favorite season by far. However, as someone who has long suffered with anxiety and depression, I totally get the fall and winter blues.

I guess it’s just biochemistry – our brain get’s less sunlight, less Vit. D is produced in our system and TADA! We feel like shit some days. If you’re someone who suffers from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), depression, anxiety, borderline, or you’re bipolar , you’re probably more prone to feel under the weather as fall rolls around.

Even if you’re in prime mental health (lucky!) you might get those blue days when getting out of bed is a chore. This post is dedicated to all you ladies who get those days/weeks or even months, where forcing a smile is a sad reality.

Through the years of dealing with this myself, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve that have helped me deal with those feelings. The fall and winter blues are also closely tied to the amount of pressure this season brings.

Family events, Holidays, presents, being a certain way in front of your family. Or maybe even having to speak to some of them. So much shit to do. So much shit to think about. Memories, missing those who’re no longer with us. A lot of emotional baggage comes with the fall and winter blues. I so get it. It’s hard! They should call it the high expectations season.

Let’s see if I can help you help yourself to a dash of positive vibes this season. Now, I’m not sayin’ you’ll be laughin’ & shakin’ your belly like a jar full of jelly (LOL) BUT  – it’s worth a try yeah? Every little helps 😉 Let’s kick some fall and winter blues ass ladies!

Dealing With The Fall And Winter Blues

Now, I perceive the fall and winter blues as 2 different entities. Fall blues are more about the change from summer heat, sunshine and light energy, to a more damp, dark and foggy aura of the fall. It’s a transition that takes toll on all our senses, and our bodies react accordingly. All the serotonin in the world won’t make it easier, at least from my experience.

The winter blues however, are a different story. The Holiday Season starts in November, pretty much. With Thanksgiving, and then Christmas & Hanukkah, it’s all about the joy. Presents, family meetings, festivities, Santa Claus on every damn’ corner.

All the Christmas decorations and the sugar sweet pictures of happy families. It can get depressing when your life isn’t half as “perfect”. It’s a time of reflection, and often comparing yourself and your life to that of others – ads included.

So now that we’ve established the ins and outs of fall and winter blues, let’s take a look at what could make this time easier and possibly even happier for y’all!

5 Ways To Deal With The Fall Blues

Get Comfortable.

It might seem like such a small thing, but wearing comfy, cozy clothes this time of year really turns your well being factor up a notch. You’ve got enough on your plate, add fall and winter blues to that – feeling uncomfortable in your clothes is the last thing you want.

Cozy knits, sweat pants, joggers, hoodies, warm oversized scarves, fuzzy socks, furry slippers – it’s like your clothes giving you a hug. Seriously – give it a try!

I get pissed off if I have to brave it in skinny jeans and tight tops come fall. Just gimmie yoga pants and an XXL chunky knit sweater.

Oh, and UGGs. Yep, I’m a basic bitch and proud. It does take the pressure off looking perfect, and makes me feel comfortable, which helps.

Eat Your Heart Out.

So what you eat really does matter, and it also affects your moods. I’ve noticed that when I eat a lot of healthy grains, fatty fish like salmon, olive oil and olives, nut butters – you get the jist?

I noticed that when I generally stick to whole, unprocessed foods, I start feeling better. Lighter on my feet, my energy levels rise and my moods improve.

When I slip up and go back to chocolate, sugary store bought granola , big portions and late meals, I start feeling more like shit again. I know fall calls for some comfort food, but ironically, I find emotional comfort in really focusing on a healthy, whole diet.

I feel a positive change in my body, which makes me feel good. Try it!

Fall In Love With Bubble Baths.

When I had some really dark days, I would escape to my bathroom and pour myself a fragrant, warm bubble bath. Candles n’ all.

Scented salts (something spicy, fallish like pumpkin, cinnamon, clove or gingerbread), body scrubs, SPA music, my favorite TV show.

Yep – I’d watch it in the bath, on my laptop. It really served as a relaxing time out. It would also calm me down before bed, as I had some trouble sleeping too (which often comes with the blues).

Of course, it won’t get you knocked out like Ambien will, but it’s a natural and DIY way to unwind and focus on YOU.

Get Close.

I know that alienation is a thing when the blues hit, for a lot of us. We just wanna be left the hell alone. Sometimes any
kind of human interaction is just exhausting.

But let me tell you – it’s healing with the right person/people. I’ve often found that powering through the urge to isolate myself, and opening up to close ones really helped me feel better.

It also lifted my moods and made me feel less alone. Not everyone will “get” what you’re going through and that’s fine. The right person can give you the support and attention that could make this time easier, and more fun too. Try to spend time with people you feel totally comfortable around.

Wear joggers together, light candles, watch movies, indulge in tasty meals. Hell I take my husband with me and have that bubble bath together with a glass of wine. It doesn’t make me depression free all of a sudden, but it sure does make me feel cared for, noticed, loved and happier.

Go Easy On Yourself.

Need a nap? Take it. Want to lounge all Sunday watching movies? Do it. Don’t feel like cooking? Order takeout. Seriously, so many of us think that we HAVE TO do this, HAVE TO do that.

OK so when you have a mortgage, a house with kids, pets and family members who scream EXPECTATIONS into your ear day in day out, it’s hard. However, there’s always a way to eliminate some of the HAVE TO’S. It’s called balance hun!

You don’t have to be a perfect housewife, 100% of the time. Yes, you can serve takeout sometimes. You can refuse to wear clothes in favor of lounge wear on the weekends.

You may not feel like doing stuff all day long. It’s ok. The last thing you need is someone telling you to “get it together”. Those people should be put away. If we could get it together, we would.

Jeez. Chill the fuck out, keep your kids + husband alive and well, sometimes that’s the most you can do. Keep the frills and benefits for later, when you actually feel up to it.

Delegate work, ask your partner to take some of the load off. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and support. That’s the speedy route to feeling better. Make space for YOU.

5 Ways To Deal With The Winter Holiday Blues

Embrace Your Right To Choose.

You can choose whether you’re going to make your house into a Christmas festival and start fussing about presents in October. You can also choose whether you want to spend Christmas with 50 family members, or just you and your closest ones.

The first Holiday I spend with my then fiance, just the two of us, was probably the best Christmas I’ve ever experienced. We ate awesome food in our pj’s, cuddled up on the sofa, watching silly shit.

No pressure, no family feuds, no expectations, no need to slap on a smile just coz’ tis’ the season to be fucking jolly. None of that BS. Just us, sharing the love, enjoying the season, drinking mulled wine. Yes, people will get offended. They will emotionally blackmail you into attending 100 family meetings, work outings, Christmas shopping sprees.

They will probably nag and ask why and label you as weird or insensitive and selfish. But you know what? Fuck them.

You have the right to choose how you spend your time. It’s your life – and as far as I’m concerned, none of us have signed a contract at birth, promising to spend Christmas or any other holiday for that matter, in a certain way. In the end, when you spend the Holidays exactly how you’ve always wanted to, the blues seem to lift off. It’s a Christmas Miracle!

Fuck The Pressure.

The right gifts, inviting the right guests, seating them the right way. Cooking the appropriate foods using the right recipes that have been in your family for generations. Wearing that dress that your mother loves and you hate, just to make her happy. Eating one slice of cake instead of two coz’ aunt Cheryl will comment on your weight gain. Fuck that.

The pressure that we put ourselves under for the sake of satisfied smiles on the faces of our family members. The frustration, the anger, the resentment – all that really fuels the blues. Just thinking about it will make a sista frown. How about being more in tune with yourself?

Eat the cake, wear sweat pants, cook what you God damn please. Can you feel the pressure lift off, taking the blues with it? Hell Yeah!

Plan Ahead.

OK so when I know I will be involved in some sort of festivities, I tend to procrastinate. I always think about all the work and the shopping and stuff I’d love to do in fact, but I just can’t get to it. Even if it’s things I’m doing out of my own will, not coz I’m expected to. And it gets me down.

Hell, it makes me feel guilty that everyone is already sorted out and I’m still far behind the pack. Nowadays, I plan ahead. I think about what we’d wanna eat, what we might want under the tree (dog included!), and I roughly estimate how much cash that’s gonna eat up. I feel safe that there’s some sort of plan in place, making it easier to see what’s on my plate.

Procrastinating can really amp up anxiety and make you feel overwhelmed and blue, so powering through and trying to think ahead can really clear your mind and make you feel lighter. Give it a try!

Make Peace With How Things Are.

Not talking to your parents? Constantly fighting with your sister? Hate going over to your aunt’s yearly Christmas Dinner? Guess what I’m gonna tell you? Fuck it. Seriously – are you going to magically fix your family problems because someone stuck a tree in your living room and cooked some turkey? Don’t think so. Don’t force yourself to FIX things.

I’ll even go a step further, don’t force yourself to meet with people you don’t wanna see, and talk to people you don’t wanna talk to. You’re not talking to them for a good reason. Christmas is not a free pass to be forgiven just because Santa and mistletoe. If there’s issues lingering for a long time, and you’re not ready to put them behind you – don’t.

I know it’s hard and gut wrenching and guilt inducing, but I’ve powered past it and it felt GREAT. Sometimes we just gotta make peace with the way things are. Forcing yourself to do stuff you don’t wanna do with definitely make you feel blue. It even rhymes so it has to be true.

Eat Some Cake.

On the bright side, Holiday Season = some God damn great food. I’ve found that some moderate indulgence always makes me feel better. Mulled wine with the hubby, Christmas chocolates with my besties, turkey shared with my German Shepherd – yas. Comfort food all the way yo!

If you can’t bear to enjoy ANY part of the Holidays, it’s safe to say you could at least enjoy the food, no? I’m all about looking for the positives, and sometimes all that’s positive is gingerbread cake with double icing and hot chocolate with marshmallows.

On a couch watching movies by candle light, under a fluffy blanket. Come on, it’s gotta feel at least a little better, right?

If not, think about it this way – it’s 2 months out of your life tops. What’s 2 months? Think about January. Everyone will fuck off to their own lives, broke and 10 pounds heavier. That’s surely something to look forward to?

I found this amazing and super easy recipe for a luxurious, soft and wallet friendly body butter over at the Living The Nourished Life blog.

I decided to make a teeny tiny alteration by adding some sweet almond oil to the mix.

You can also add some essential oils like in the original, for your favorite fragrance.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup solid coconut oil (don’t soften or melt!)
  • 3 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • Optional: Lavender essential oil for a relaxing fix or your favorite essential oil (5-15 drops, depending on how strong you like the fragrance)

Preparation & Use:

  • Place the solid coconut oil in a mixing bowl, add sweet almond oil
  • Whip up the ingredients with an electric hand mixer or a robot mixer like Kitchen Aid
  • Don’t use a blender or food processor – it won’t work for a whipped texture!
  • Add the essential oil once the mixture has the texture of whipping cream, whip up for 1 more minute
  • The whipped coconut butter is ready to use for 3-6 months! Store in a jar and enjoy!

Note: if your house is very hot, store the butter in a cool place so the oil doesn’t melt.

Preparation & Use:

  • It doesn’t get easier than this  – combine the ingredients together. Store in a mason jar, use 2-3 x weekly for gloriously smooth, nourished skin that smells amazing.

Note: the coconut oil and argan oil mix is so nourishing, it will probably leave your skin soft and moisturized enough to skip the body lotion/butter. Unless you have really dry or sensitive skin, then follow with a light body balm.

5 Mistakes You Need To Avoid For An Effective Bedtime Beauty Routine

Your nighttime skin care routine is absolutely KEY to the beauty and health of your skin. Why? Because nighttime is when our bodies regenerate and rejuvenate after a long day’s work. When you’re sound asleep, your body is repairing cellular damage that naturally occurs during the day.

At night, your skin is in a truly sweet spot for beauty care. It’s not busy with fighting off free radicals, UVA/UVB rays, pollution and other environmental factors, like during daytime.

Cleared of makeup and impurities, skin is ready to absorb and make use of nutrients, vitamins and minerals found in creams.

This makes your nighttime skin care routine a great opportunity to provide your skin with moisturizing and nourishing products.

Not only will they help it regenerate, their goodness will also be used more effectively, bringing better results.

Are You Sabotaging Your Beauty Efforts?

Having said that, some of the things you might be doing as part of your nighttime skin care routine, could be totally sabotaging your beauty efforts.

It’s vital that we pay attention to how we treat our skin, especially once we enter the late twenties.

That’s when the production of collagen starts to drop, as well as our skin’s ability to regenerate.

Unless you make an effort to take proper care of your face and body, you’re heading down the premature aging road, fast.

Isn’t that what most women are freaked out about, as they get closer or past 30 years old? I know I sure am. Who doesn’t want to stay young a supple for as long as possible?

What women need to understand, is that as they get older, their skin requires more love and attention to stay the same way as it would naturally at 20.

Let’s dive in and see if you’re making any of the top 5 nighttime beauty routine mistakes, and looking 5 or even more years older than you actually are.

1. Leaving Your Makeup On.

This has got to be the main culprit. The absolute worst thing you can do to your face, is sleeping with makeup on. Let’s take a look at the consequences of doing this on a regular basis:

  • Clogged Pores
  • Dull and gray complexion
  • Breakouts, blackheads, acne
  • Overly dried out or even dehydrated skin
  • Sabotaging your skin’s natural cycle of regeneration and rejuvenation
  • Premature aging – wrinkling, sagging
  • Swollen eyes, dark circles
  • Increased sebum production, leading to oily skin

I hope the above reasons are enough to convince you that there are NO exceptions to this rule – you have to remove your makeup thoroughly before you go to bed.

It might have been ok once a while when you were in college, but as you get closer to or past your 30s, it’s a big no no.

If you do end up sleeping in your makeup, make sure you change the pillowcase before your next snooze. 

The impurities and oily residue have transferred onto the pillow from the night before. They could cause clogged pores and breakouts when in contact with your face, especially if you have acne prone or oily skin. They will also sabotage your nighttime beauty routine efforts come next bedtime.

2. Skipping Cleansing and Toning.

No different than in the morning, your nighttime beauty routine should include cleansing and toning, stat.

Cleansing rids of you of what’s left of your makeup after a long day, along with all the impurities and oily residue that have accumulated on your skin.

It’s important to pay attention to cleansing especially before bedtime. You should remove all traces of makeup and make sure that your skin is clean as a whistle.

Run a cotton pad across your cheek and forehead, if it’s white, you’re good to go.

Having said that, make sure your cleanser doesn’t dry your skin out. Micellar lotions and waters are an excellent solution to nighttime cleansing on point.

They’re very effective at thoroughly removing any dirt and makeup, and they’re also gentle on your skin.

Toning should naturally come after cleansing. When you cleanse, the pH balance of your skin changes. 

A pH of 5.5 is the sweet spot for the face on your skin, toners helps you get there and prepares your skin for moisturization and regeneration. 

Pay attention to the toner you use. Stay away from astringents, no matter what skin type you have. They contain a lot of alcohol which overly dries out your skin – this is not beneficial for any sort of skin.

Acne skin will not benefit from astringents either, it needs gentle moisturization more than anything else. Drying it out is a myth – don’t do it, period.

Milky textured toners with moisturizing properties are a safe bet, they’re delicate and do their job. Make sure your toner is not alcohol based!

3. Using Your Day Cream

Having a few favorite face creams and using them for both your day and nighttime skin care routine?

Join the club ladies! I always thought that night creams were just a marketing fad, and getting the same cream in a day and night variant was not necessary.

I used to believe that there was no difference between day and night creams, thinking this was only a way for brands to increase women’s spending on face care.

Only when I started working in the beauty industry, I realized that there’s a colossal difference between the two.
Your skin has different needs in the morning vs. nighttime. Let’s take a quick look: 

Your Skin’s Top 3 Daytime Beauty Needs

Protection – from UVA/UVB rays, pollution, stress, bacteria, dirt

Lightweight Moisturization – to replenish the water that your skin has lost during the night

Revitalisation – hormonal changes and imbalance which often affect women, have an impact on skin, causing swollen puffy eyes.

Lack of sleep, stress and poor diet contribute to dark circles, dull complexion and undereye bags.

Your Skin’s Top 3 Nighttime Beauty Needs

Regeneration & Nourishment – Your skin enters reparative mode during the night. This is when it regenerates after an entire day of stressors.

It’s also much more prone to effectively absorbing nutrients, as it’s not exposed to daily stress like sunshine, pollution, dirt etc, and focused on one task – regenerating.

For this reason, when you apply a face cream / mask / treatment before bed, it’s prone to bring better, more visible results.

Intense Moisturization  – your skin loses more water when you snooze. This is why your nighttime skin care routine should involve an intensely moisturizing serum or cream.

It will prevent dehydration, which often leads to increased sebum production and breakouts, as well as feelings of discomfort and even irritation.

4. Not Moisturizing After A Bath/Shower

When I say nighttime skin care routine, I don’t only mean the skin on your face girlfriend!

Your body also needs special care and attention.

Even if you’re using a moisturizing or nourishing body wash, it’s still not providing your body with the essential amount of moisture that it actually needs. Why?

Unless you’re using emollient or oil based body wash (in which case you should moisturize post shower anyway), your shower lotion most probably contains soap and SLS.

Both of these are responsible for that rich lather you love and enjoy. Unfortunately, they also contribute to drying out your skin.

I don’t know about you, but I get that uncomfortable, tight, irritable feeling on my skin if I don’t moisturize after a shower or bath. Even if you don’t, try rubbing your skin gently an hour after a shower sans moisturization.

Chances are, it won’t feel super soft, supple and smooth.

It might feel rough, especially on your knees and elbows. Around your 30s, skin has a tougher time maintaining a right water balance. Whatever your skin type, your body will benefit from a surge of moisture and nutrients post shower.

The Low Down On Body Care Products

There are so many types and varieties of body care products, it's confusing and pretty tough to choose the right one for your skin's needs. Let's go over the basic ones:

Body Butter - by definition rich and thick textured, nourishing and moisturizing. Perfect for dry, dehydrated skin and during fall and winter. Often enriched with plant oils like shea, cocoa, argan and olive.

Body Lotion - light and delicate texture, more milky and easily
absorbed by the skin (or at least it should be!) Perfect for normal/combination skin, as well as the warmer months of spring and summer.

Dry Body Oils - have the nourishing and protective qualities of plan based oils, without leaving a greasy film on your skin like baby oil would for instance. Great for sunburnt skin, dry and dehydrated as well as normal and even sensitive.

Most popular varieties contain+ argan, shea, olive, macadamia, marula, cocoa and jojoba.

In Shower Lotion -  by far my favorite recently! You use them like you would a standard body lotion, except you do so right after using body wash, on slightly moist skin, and rinse right after.

They leave a soft film on your skin, similar to dry body oil. Nivea has a great line of these, also for dry and sensitive skin.

Body Milk - not as rich and thick as body butter, yet more nurturing and dense than body lotion. Body milk is often infused with plant oils and emollients, leaving a noticeable protective layer on your skin post application. Perfect for sensitive, dry and dehydrated skin.

5. Going To Bed Dehydrated

I will say this over and over – your skin loses water more dynamically during the nighttime.

That’s why your nighttime skin care routine should definitely involve moisturizing from the inside aka drinking water!

You can use moisturizer by the ton, but if you’re not hydrated properly, your skin will still feel the difference.
This goes especially for Wine Wednesdays and post party nights. 

Alcohol dehydrates your system, having a significant effect on the wellbeing of your skin.

However, wine does have an amazing concentration of antioxidants which are a blessing for your complexion. BUT – you still need to drink that water gal pal!

There is even such a thing as water therapy, where you drink 5-6 glasses of water upon waking up to maintain a state of wellbeing, eliminate toxins, and ever cure certain conditions.

Downing a glass of water after waking up, on an empty stomach, kicks off your hydration for the day and helps to flush toxins which in turn increases your body’s ability to absorb nutrients. You can drink it saute, ice cold to boost your metabolism, or add some lemon for even further benefits.

I’ve tried this and it does make a difference, if you’re consistent the results will come around.

2.Cleanse

morning skin care routineOnce you’re done with your water, the next step to your morning beauty routine checklist is cleansing. Cleansing in the morning basically comes down to preparing your skin for a quenching dose of moisturizer.

Pick your  cleanser according to skin type – super important!

  • Normal to combination skin is the easiest – you can go with face wash, micellar water, cleansing milk or even face wipes. This skin type is a blessing in terms of beauty care.

Make sure you avoid alcohol based cleansers, as they tend to dry out skin significantly, thereby upsetting its chemical balance.

  • Oily and acne prone skin likes delicate, water based face washes in the form of gel.

Avoid using face wash with exfoliating properties on a daily basis, as it will induce even more sebum production and cause further breakouts. It can also irritate your skin which is already sensitive due to it’s condition.

The purpose of toning your skin is restoring the natural ph balance after cleansing.

Your skin has a thin, protective outside layer called the acid mantle. It’s pH is around 5.5 (slightly acidic) and it’s the optimal level of pH to keep your skin supple and healthy looking.

When you cleanse or even wash your face with water, you’re changing the pH of your skin, which upsets its natural balance.

Depending on where you live and how hard/soft your water is, the change in pH can be quite significant. This means your skin will go into overdrive to get back to the 5.5 mark.

The key to maintaining skin health, as well as overall well being, is balance.

That’s why you should tone – to maintain a healthy balance within your skincare routine. Toning is fast and easy – apply some toner to a cotton pad, and swipe your face gently like you would when taking off makeup.

How To Choose The Right Toner?

When it comes to toners, I have realized through trial and error, that the most important part is making sure your morning beauty routine checklisttoner is alcohol free.

Even if your skin is oily/acne prone, stay away from astringents. They will dry out your skin like mad and eventually make matters worse by kicking its sebum production into overdrive.

The rule of thumb when it comes to toners: the more natural, the better. No alcohol, moisturizing properties and milky textures are things to look for.

Toners have a bad rep due to the fact that most women associate them with astringents – the horrible, stinging lotions from hell.

They’re meant to constrict your pores and remove excess oil and bacteria from the skin, but really they just make it feel like Sahara in the middle of July.

I’ve had a fair share of bad experiences with astringents, especially when I was in my teens and absolutely covered in acne. Astringents made it so much worse. Do yourself a favor and don’t use them.

Let’s establish a new beginning with toners. Toner = gentle, moisturizing lotion which balances your skin pH for a supple and glowing complexion. Much better!

4.Moisturize

morning beauty routine checklistNow onto the moisturizing – probably my favorite part. There’s nothing quite as comforting as the feeling of a beautifully scented and soft textured moisturizer melting into your skin.

The softness, suppleness and comfort are a cherry on top of the morning routine!

Your morning beauty routine checklist should include moisturizing for 3 super important reasons:

  • Skin loses water when you sleep, you need to replenish that moisture with applying moisturizer
  • Your skin will be faced with environmental factors throughout the day, like sunshine exposure, pollution and stress, meaning you need to provide it with a protective layer. Thi is what moisturizing will take care of too.
  • Moisturizing prevents premature aging by providing your skin with the right amount of moisture and nutrients.

5 Qualities Your Daytime Moisturizer Should Have

  1. It should contain an SPF filter of at least 15, protecting against both UVA and UVB rays
  2. The texture should be light and easily absorbed by your skin. A thick, rich cream applied during daytime burdens your skin with loads of ingredients which it won’t have the capability to use. Remember your skin is busy during the day, fighting free radicals and countering environmental factors.
  3. It should provide a good base for makeup – this goes back to themorning beauty routine checklist 2 point. If you apply a thick, rich textured cream to your face in the morning, piling makeup on top can create an uncomfortable “mask”, literally. Makeup tends to smudge and wear off much faster if you’ve got a thick and greasy base. Not even going to start on what this combination will do to your pores.   4.  At least one moisturizing agent should figure in the first 3 ingredients on the list. Why is this important? I’ve mentioned before, that ingredients on beauty products are listed in order of concentration, going from most to least. Look for: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, emollients like petrolatum, paraffin and lanolin
  5. It should contain at least one plant oil – because natural plant oils kick ass at moisturizing and nourishing your skin. Added bonus – they give moisturizers and amazing fragrance, naturally. Don’t be fooled by the fact that they’re oils – they won’t make your skin greasy! Look for: shea, olive, macadamia , coconut, jojoba, almond.

Plant oils are also nature’s emollients, sealing in moisture and protecting your skin from irritation and environmental factors.

So this step is really up to you and your preferences, but I think it’s important to spend a minute and discuss primer.

What Is Primer?

Primer is a gel, cream or powder textured cosmetic that smoothes the skin, evens out skin tone, and provides a great base which prolongs the longevity of foundation and makeup in general.

A good reason why primer should find a place in your morning beauty routine checklist?

Primer poses a barrier between the skin and foundation, which makes makeup last longer, especially in hot weather. It also protects the skin from reacting to foundation, like becoming overly dried out or oily.

Used on its own, primer provides a more polished and evened out look, without having to use foundation.

Primer is mainly used for the face, eyelids and eyelashes. Each type of primer has a specific goal:

  • Face primer is mainly used to make makeup last longer, even out skintone, provide a smoother and more radiant complexion
  • Eyelid primer is used to prevent eyeshadow from creasing, smudging and fading. You can used colored eyelid primers to intensify the color of your eyeshadow and further prolong a “freshly done” makeup look.
  • Eyelash primer is used to thicken and nourish your eyelashes before applying mascara, also prolonging its longevity

When you wake up after a (hopefully) regenerating dose of beauty sleep, you need to prepare your skin for the day. With all the daily rush, stress, environmental factors like pollution and sun exposure – your skin needs your protection and nurture.

Making sure that you’re getting the right moisture surge treatment will save you a lot of time, frustration and money.

Here’s your cheat sheet to picking the right product:

Normal/Combination:

Most creams contain either glycerin or paraffin nowadays, make sure you read the ingredients list!

Natural ingredient extracts like grape, cucumber and aloe vera are all great moisturizing and refreshing agents to include in your normal/combination skin care routine.

If you’re blessed with this skin type, it’s pretty safe for you to experiment with products to find the one that works best for you.

It’s a rare occasion as most of us are affected by hormonal changes/imbalances which take a huge toll on the condition of our skin.Make sure you nurture your skin with regular moisturization and try sticking to natural ingredients.

You don’t want to upset the chemical balance that you have pretty much on point! To keep the T-zone in check, go for lighter cream textures and avoid oil infused or emollient based products.

Oily/Acne Prone:

Sticking to dermocosmetics which have been tested for tolerance by sensitive skin is your safest bet.

I can wholeheartedly recommend brands like La Roche-Posay, Avene, Bioderma, Cetaphil and SVR.

I’ve worked with all of these and tested them on my own skin numerous times. If you see drugstore creams for sensitive skin, don’t be fooled.

They are mostly predestined for moderately dry complexions and probably contain preservatives, which are hugely irritating to very sensitive skin. Don’t risk it girlfriend!  Your skincare routine needs VIP treatment.

4.SPF Protection

You don’t only need to think about SPF filters when you’re planning a vacay. SPF needs to become your bestie STAT.

All day, everyday. Even though a lot of creams nowadays have some sort of SPF filter, it’s still not as common as it should be.

The sun emits UVA/UVB rays, both of which affect our skin. Let me break it down for you:

UVA Rays:

  1. Are not affected by altitude or weather
  2. Present all day, everyday, all year round
  3. Can pass through window glass
  4. Penetrate deep into the layers of your skin
  5. Cause long term skin damage

UVB Rays:

  1. Cause sunburn
  2. Make us lovely and tanned
  3. Help the body make vitamin D, crucial for our good moods & metabolism amongst others
  4. Are most intense in high altitudes, in the summer and the middle of the day
  5. Can cause cancer and cataract

SPF Can Save Your Life – No Joke.

You need to protect your skin with at least 15 SPF daily, in order to avoid future consequences like premature aging, uneven skin tone, or even cancer like melanoma.

I must admit I wasn’t concerned with SPF protection, until I started working for La Roche-Posay and we had a dermatologist come in for the day.

We had the chance to get a full body skin check up. It turned out I have a suspicious looking mole on my arm and was told to monitor it every 6 months.

To make matters worse, it started changing shape and getting darker over time. I freaked out and rushed to the docs, skin care routine 30sonly to find out I need to have it removed stat and sent for lab tests.

Fortunately it turned out to be benign, but I can’t tell you just how anxious and scared I was.

Since then, I do NOT omit SPF filters in my skincare routine. Considering that I’ve grown up in the Middle East, I’ve had intense sun exposure whilst growing up, which puts me at bigger risk of skin cancer.

5.Nourishment

Nourishing your skin is crucial once you hit your late twenties. All those college life shenanigans, an office job, stress,skin care routine 30s questionable diet choices, pollution, lack of regular exercise and sleep deprivation take a toll on our skin.

I will speak for myself here – I’m guilty of ALL the above, at one point or another in life so far.

Shiz happens when you start adulting full time.

What you can do for yourself to take you through all of life’s challenges like a boss, is maintain a healthy diet.

Great Diet = Great Skin. Period.

That getting 6 hours of sleep, eating junk, smoking socially and stressing the hell out every day will not matter, as long as I spend the big bucks on premium skincare. WRONG!

After facing severe burnout in my late twenties, I was pretty much forced to start taking care of myself, both mentally and physically.

That’s when I discovered the importance of overall body wellness, nutrition, and nourishment.

I was left with no choice but to comply or basically break down completely andskin care routine 30s end up in hospital care.

That’s when I started to actually think about what I put inside my body, how much
sleep I get, how much me-time I allow myself and what I do to unwind.

For the past year, I’ve been learning it the hard way. Now I share my experiences so you don’t have to.

Basic Nourishment Checklist For An AH-MAZING Skin Care Routine

I will be dedicating a whole section of this blog to nourishment and beautifying your face & body from the inside. For now, let me run this short list by you. It’s the absolute, bare essentials of what you should be doing to nourish your body. Trust me – the results are totally worth it!

1. 7-8h sleep, every night.

skin care routine 30sI know you baby mamas are in a different position since your baby calls for your attention at all hours of the day and night, my mommy friends stick to this rule: baby sleeps = they sleep.

If you’re a working mama, involve dad. If you’re a single mama – involve your family/besties. It takes a village, right?

Try your best to get as much sleep as you can, you know what the lack of sleep does right?

Another thing to think about:

When you get on an airplane, they tell you that once the pressure drops, oxygen masks will be released above your seats. Then they tell you to PUT ON YOUR MASK FIRST, before you help your children or others. Why is this relevant? You can’t take care of others, if you’re not taking care of yourself.

2. 5 servings of fruit & veg daily.

You wouldn’t believe what this does for your wellbeing. I was the first one to call bullshit on the importance of askin care routine 30s HEALTHY diet.

Sure I would give into fads, in the midst of battling an ED for years. My eating was all over the place, it was chaos.

Only when I finally decided to get myself into therapy and cleaned up my meal plan, I started to see ah-mazing results.

It took about a month for the first ones to become visible.

My skin became radiant, I actually had color on my face as opposed to a pale and almost see through complexion. The permanent, shady bags disappeared from under my eyes. I started to look healthy, I was finally getting well.

3. 30 minutes of me-time, daily. 

skin care routine 30sThat’s the minimum you should set aside for your leisure, every day. Sounds crazy in your busy schedule? It’s actually absolutely essential if you want to keep your sanity.

When we get lost in the whirlwind of adulting, raising kids, climbing up the career ladder, running a household AND making sure our marriage is on the right tracks – PHEW, that’s a long list.

Try saying that in one breath, let alone doing it all without a break.

Having no time for YOU will begin to accumulate frustration, irritability, stress and anxiety. Everyone needs some personal space to unwind and do something they enjoy.

Take 30 minutes a day, be it in the morning before everyone wakes up or before bedtime when everyone’s sound asleep. Read a book, take a bath, watch your favorite show. It sounds CRAZY simple and what the hell does it have to do with skin care routine in your 30s?

Let me tell you this – have you ever seen a glowing, healthy looking woman who’s insanely stressed out ? One that is walking, talking wellness but doesn’t do anything to take care of herself?

Point made. Cuddle up with that book sista, and pour yourself a glass of wine. Wine is skin care routine 30sFILLED with antioxidants and they’re uber good for your skin.

They reduce the amount of free radicals in your system. Free radicals contribute to aging and increase the risk of getting cancer. Do I have you convinced?

That’s it – just those 3 mere steps, for now.

I know it’s uber hard to switch around your schedule and basically whole life to cater to a new skin care routine in your 30s.

It seems unnecessary and an easy fix like a cream/mask/botox/surgery seems way more feasible.

Unfortunately easy fixes don’t work, at least not long term.

Skin Care Routine In Your 30s = Putting Your Wellbeing First

skin care routine 30sRevelation time! To some of you it may seem like I’m making this huge deal out of something as simple as a skin care routine.

I’ve been one to neglect the importance of CARE in general, for years. Only with a substantial health crisis behind me, I’m now aware of how damn important it is to pay attention to your body and beauty care regimen.

Start with your skin. It’s what you see in the mirror everyday. It reflects what’s going on inside your body and your mind. Staying healthy and looking healthy will have a SIGNIFICANT impact on your overall wellbeing.

I hope that I’ve managed to convince y’all that establishing a new skin care routine in your 30s is basically the start of a new lifestyle chapter.

When you start taking care of yourself inside & out – you WILL see a huge difference, and it won’t just be skin deep.
